Christiane Féral-Schuhl works in the fields of digital technology, personal data and intellectual property. She also serves as mediator, arbitrator and cyberarbitrator.
She chaired the National Bar Council (CNB) (2018-2020), the representative institution of the legal profession (70,000) in France and internationally.
She was President of the Paris Bar (24,000 lawyers) in 2012 and 2013 (see Le Barreau en actes).
She served as a member of the Gender Equality High Council (Haut Conseil à l’égalité entre les femmes et les hommes) as a qualified personality (2013-2015) and co-chaired with the Deputy Christian Paul, the Parliamentary Committee (2014-2015) which presented its report “the digital age and liberties : a new democratic era” to the President of the National Assembly, Claude Bartolone, on October 8, 2015. She served also as a member of the High Council of administrative jurisdictions (CSTA CAA).
She chaired the Association for the Development of Legal IT (l’Association pour le Développement de l’Informatique Juridique – ADIJ) from 2000 to 2010 ; she is today its honorary President.
She was also a lecturer in e-commerce and contract for the Master II “Public Internet Law” (Université Paris I) from 2007 to 2009).
She was named godmother of the promotion 2021-2022 of the EFB (Paris students lawyers) and of the EDAGO (Grand Ouest students lawyers).
Christiane Féral-Schuhl’s clients include major users of IT and technological products (industry, commerce, banking, insurance, aeronautics, luxury, etc.) as well as IT and Internet players (software publishers, service providers, access and content providers)
She is also registered as an accredited mediator on the list of mediators of the Paris Mediation and Arbitration Center (CMAP), the Equanim International, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the Paris Court of Appeal and the Quebec Bar. She is also listed in the directory of the National Center for Mediation of Lawyers (CNMA) of the French National Bar Council (CNB).
She is also a cyber arbitrator (WIPO) and a PARL expert (AFNIC).
She has been appointed as second vice-president of the National Mediation Council as representative of the CNB (arrêté du 25 mai 2023).
She also participates in numerous debates and conferences on issues related to digital technology and mediation. She is often interviewed and consulted by public authorities.
In addition to her professional activity, she publishes books and numerous articles in her areas of expertise. She is co-author with Michèle Jaudel, also a mediator and lawyer, of “La médiation, à l’épreuve de la pratique ” (Delmas, 2022) and, with Xavier Leonetti, magistrate and head of the cybercrime unit at the Ministry of Justice, of « Cybersécurité, mode d’emploi » (PUF 2022). She is also the author of « Cyberdroit : le droit à l’épreuve de l’Internet » (Dalloz Praxis 8th edition 2020-2021) and the mini-format book « La protection des données personnelles » (Dalloz, 2019) .
Christiane Féral-Schuhl holds a master’s degree in private law with a major in judicial careers from the University of Paris II – Panthéon-Assas.
She was admitted to the Paris Bar in 1981 and to the Quebec Bar in 2016.
Christiane Féral-Schuhl was president of the Association pour le Développement de l’Informatique Juridique (ADIJ) for ten years (2000-2010) and is now its honorary president. She was also a lecturer in e-commerce and contract law for the Master II “Public Internet Law” at the University of Paris I from 2007 to 2009.
Christiane speaks French and English.
Christiane Féral-Schuhl is regularly distinguished in professional guides (Chambers, Legal 500 EMEA, Who’s Who Legal France, Best lawyers, Leaders League…). In 2023, she was named by Chambers Europe as “Senior Statesperson” for the fourth consecutive year in the Information Technology Law category, the highest distinction of this Guide (Chambers Europe).
In 2022, she was named “Though leader” for the second consecutive year in the Data category (Who’s Who Legal).
Previously, she was also ranked among the “50 best business lawyers” (Décideurs Magazine 2018) and “100 French people who matter in cybersecurity” (Usine Nouvelle, January 2019). She also received the “International Jurist Award” in London (International Council of Jurists 2013) and the “EMC Personality Awards” which rewards the outstanding personality of the last twenty years in the legal field (“20 years of Documentation, 2014”).
